Davies’ autobiographical films of working class life in post-war Liverpool have earned him a reputation as one of the most original and prestigious figures in contemporary British cinema. Of Time and the City sees Davies returning to the city of his birth to chronicle its growth and development up to the present. Combining archive footage and contemporary material, a collage of music, radio clips and the director’s personal voiceover, the film bristles with wit and emotion and is a good counterpart to the Jill Craigie film The Way We Live showing earlier in November.
