Dir. Steve McQueen, UK, 2008, 95 mins.
Cast. Michael Fassbender, Stuart Graham.

Celebrated visual artist Steve McQueen won the Camera d’Or at Cannes 2008 with his feature film debut, an intense, powerful and timely exploration of Bobby Sands’ 1981 hunger strike at Maze Prison in Northern Ireland. With meticulous attention to detail, Hunger is equally interested in the human body as both weapon and battleground; as portrayed in the clashes between wardens and prisoners. Aided by a breathtaking,
visceral performance by Fassbender as Sands, this is a devastating glimpse of political and personal sacrifice during a tragic period in British and Irish history.
