Dir. Uli Edel, Germany, 2008, 149 mins, subtitled.

Uli Edel continues the trend for celebrated recent films which confront dark periods in Germany’s history (Downfall, The Lives of Others) in this riveting drama which revisits the days of Germany’s Red Army Faction, the left wing militant group who fought an international terrorist campaign opposing American imperialism and the West German establishment throughout the 1970s. The film deftly deals with the mentality of those prepared to murder innocents in the name of democracy and justice and is already being talked up for next year’s Oscars.
