Dir. Phyllida Lloyd, UK, 2011, 104 mins.
Cast. Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent, Richard E. Grant.
In a controversial choice director Phyllida Lloyd retells the story of one of the 20th century’s most influential and despised women in this surprising and intimate portrait of our only female Prime Minister, with an eerily perfect performance from Meryl Streep. Love her or loathe her, you can’t help but be intrigued by the concept of the world’s greatest actress having a go at Maggie Thatcher, Milk Snatcher! Streep is splendid, giving a performance that evokes Thatcher’s spirit and the film is far from the hatchet-job everyone was expecting and is an attempt at an even-handed account of her life before, during and after the years in power. Well worth a look.
