Tim Knowles Summer 2009
Late Night Lido Endeavour was an event by Plymouth Arts Centre which took place over a July weekend at Tinside Lido: Plymouth's beautiful Art Deco open-air swimming pool, on the seafront at the Hoe.
A programme of short films by internationally-renowned artists was shown on a massive projection screen.
180 people attended the screenings over the weekend, with many more pausing to watch and enjoy the films from the various platforms above the Lido. Many people came and swam in the Lido before the films.
The weather certainly could have been better, with mixed forecasts, but in the end all three nights remained free from rain.
Artist Tim Knowles curated the event around the theme of artists' endeavour, following on from his solo exhibition at Plymouth Arts Centre. He reflects on the success of the open air film screenings:
"It was a magical and very special event. There was the large screen and the quality of the films themselves, which were framed by the Lido and illuminated fountain in the background. You could see the lights from the overnight ferries out to sea, departing for Roscoff or Santander. People picnic-ed on loungers and deck chairs as they watched the films. There was the sound of the film soundtracks and the sea in the silent pieces. Everyone joined in their applause at the end."
Paula Orrell, Curator at Plymouth Arts Centre, said: "Plymouth has many incredible sites and artists are inspired by the history and importance of this city. The Lido created a spectacular setting, engaging audiences in thought-provoking works."
Plymouth Arts Centre, Plymouth City Council are collaborating this summer to show artworks by Tim Knowles across the city of Plymouth.
In August Tim Knowles will be setting flags flying on Plymouth Hoe in a new public artwork called Wind Barbs.
