This exhibition presented by YPAC (Young Plymouth Arts Centre) includes new work by members of the group; it also provides a window onto YPAC’s history, showcasing some of the highlights since the group formed in 2008.

YPAC write:
"It’s not by chance that we are here.

The British Art Show 7 has departed and the stars have aligned to give way for a new art exhibition here in Plymouth.

YPAC (Young Plymouth Arts Centre) present their collective response and interpretation of randomly selected sentences from the H.G. Wells novel, In the Days of the Comet. Then there was the sky… is the result.

By employing the themes of luck, possibility and chance the individuals took the risk of making artworks without a plan. All 14 exhibiting artists arbitrarily lifted sentences from the same novel as a device for creating a new work, specifically for this exhibition.

This unpredictable way of working allowed the group to expand their approach to making work, and like the vapours of the comet in the novel, has changed the attitudes and perspectives of the young artists."

“If you are in difficulties with a book, try the element of surprise: attack it at an hour when it isn’t expecting it” H.G.Wells

YPAC is a Plymouth Arts Centre initiative, within which young people meet and share ideas, plan and do creative projects. The group have come to operate as an artists collective. Then there was the sky... is the first time that they have worked together to curate a whole exhibition and the accompanying programme of events.
