Dir. Mia Hansen-Love, France, 2009, 110 mins, subtitled.
Cast. Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, Chiara Caselli.

Gregoire (de Lencquesaing) is a film producer whose chaotic, wheeler-dealing lifestyle masks a profound devotion to the cause of uncompromising art cinema. The film’s first half shows the chain-smoking Gregoire tirelessly troubleshooting projects for his beleaguered company, but when his reserves, financial and emotional, reach breaking point, his wife and three daughters are forced to cope with the outcome. This film, which was the French Gala screening at the London Film Festival, gives a convincing insight into the grandeur and misery of the cinema world and is, in fact, inspired by the life and tragic death of revered French producer Humbert Balsan. It is “quite simply, one of cinema’s finest tributes to its own virtues and vicissitudes – and also without doubt one of the most moving” – Jonathan Romney.
